During the period from 1959 to 1971, 66 patients, 26 males and 40 females, were operated on for the
patent ductus arteriosus. Ranges of age distribution were from eleven to 31 years and ten cases were
over 15 years old.
Continuous machinery murmur was audible in all but one case, in the latter only systolic murmur
was auscultated.
Widening of pulse pressure, over 60, were noted in 20 cases.
Among 52 cases, catheterized, 35 cases showed pulmonary hypertension.
Severe pulmonary hypertension, above 80㎜Hg, were present in 5 cases.
In 37 cases, multipe suture ligation and in 13 cases, division of the ductus were done.
In 4 cases, associated cardiovascular anomalies were found.
Operation death occurred in 4 cases : one of them, combined with A.S.D., died on 7th Postoperative
day because of bronchopneumonia of right lung and atelectasis of left lung and finally congestive heart
failure. Remaining three were all in severe pulmonary hypertension group.
One case with pulmonary arterial pressure of 110/65 ㎜Hg, died of cardiac arrest on the third
postoperative day and two cases with pulmonary arterial pressure of 80/50 ㎜Hg, 110/50 ㎜Hg,
died of operative hemorrhage due to ductus laceration.
Among six cases of postoperative complications, in one case, pneumonectomy was done due to lacera
tion of pilmonary artery and the others were discharged without sequele.
